Brooklyn and Curtis Bay is our southmost Neighborhood Cluster in Baltimore City. These two neighborhoods are located close enough to the Inner Harbor to enjoy its amenities, but have the benefits of a quieter community. In fact, Brooklyn’s Garrett Park features panoramic views of Downtown Baltimore without having to leave its borders.
During most of the 19th century, the area served as an area focused on supporting truck farming. Later, the communities were made up of primarily industrial workers that had jobs at processing plants or worked at the Baltimore Harbor. In the 1940’s, the port adjacent to the southern Baltimore communities became the largest shipbuilding port in the world due to a U.S. Military contract. Since the turn of the early 20th century, the community uniquely saw relatively equitable growth across their commercial, industrial, and housing stock in the area, leading toward the communities that are standing today.
The high rental rates indicate that the community is young and diverse, with a growing Latine population. Residents of the area are quick to identify problems and work toward finding solutions through their own resources or established networks, leading to a strong community existing within the area. Both neighborhoods and the adjoining County are home to numerous entrepreneurs, creating a strong and community-centric network of small businesses.
Numerous exciting projects continue to raise residents’ excitement for the future of Brooklyn and Curtis Bay. One such project is the development of the “Baybrook Connector”, a biking trail connecting the area to other City and County trails, and the development of a blue-green master plan to further connect the community to nature. Brooklyn and Curtis Bay continue to evolve into nature-connected communities that people from across Baltimore City have their eye on. The intentional design and community of care within the neighborhoods is what makes Brooklyn and Curtis Bay such exciting neighborhoods to live in.
Healthy Neighborhoods is partnered with Greater Baybrook Alliance.
