Central sits at the heart of Baltimore City, composed of vibrant neighborhoods in an urban landscape. Abell, Barclay, Old Goucher, Charles North, Charles Village, Ednor Gardens-Lakeside, Greenmount West, Harwood, Remington, and the Waverlies make up this Neighborhood Cluster.
These neighborhoods were developed in the 18th and 19th centuries around Greenmount Avenue and Charles Street, two prominent streetways that connected County farmers with City customers and paved the way towards the Inner Harbor. As a result of their long histories, many Central Baltimore neighborhoods are composed of 100+ year old homes, featuring distinct architectural styles such as the standard and ornate Baltimore rowhomes, three-story townhouses, brick homes, and more. Historical buildings such as Old Goucher College, Guilford Brewery Hall, and the “Painted Ladies” rowhomes also add to the “old meets new” vibe of these communities.
Major Central Baltimore amenities include Waverly Commons and its year-round Saturday farmers market, the Waverly & YMCA, and multiple small parks throughout each neighborhood. The Station North Arts & Entertainment District, Central’s lively arts scene, is formed by multiple neighborhoods, providing entertainment and cultural opportunities to its residents.
Greenmount Avenue continues to serve as an important travel corridor and main street, boasting over 100 shops, services, and restaurants along with a newly constructed public library. Finally, residents have access to important citywide transportation routes, including Greenmount Avenue, Charles and St. Paul Streets, and the Northeast Amtrak Corridor at nearby Penn station.
Healthy Neighborhoods is partnered with Jubilee Baltimore.
