What is Home Electrification?
Home Electrification refers to the process of replacing fossil fuel-dependent appliances and systems in a property with electric and modern alternatives. This includes a vast repertoire of upgrades you can make in your home, including A/C systems, kitchen appliances, laundry, and much more.
Why Should you Electrify your Home?

Energy Efficiency: When combined with smart technology, electric appliances operate more efficiently, which leads to lower energy consumption and lower utility bills.

Health Benefits: Electric appliances reduce indoor air pollution, which lowers health risks associated with the burning of fossil fuels.

Safety Concerns: Whether your household includes children or seniors, it is important to consider that electric appliances are less likely to be the cause to life-threatening accidents, such as gas leaks or fires, in comparison to their non-electric counterparts.
Renewable Energy Integration: It is not only more cost-effective to electrify your home in the long run, but itis also the more environmentally conscious choice as it can be derived from renewable energy sources like solar and wind, which reduces dependence on fossil fuels and cuts down carbon emissions.
The Home Electrification Process
- Schedule a Home Energy Audit: Audits are import to know what work you need to perform for your project and what rebates might be available. Audits can give you a path forward to make sure your project is set up for success. Schedule a home energy audit with BGE, this costs $100*, but could be rebated if using an HNI Loan Product Be present for your energy audit and ask BGE questions before your auditor arrives
- Find a Contractor: Once you receive an eduit, you will need to select a contractor to perform the scope of work:
- Choose from the auditor's options
- or select a company you like
How to Finance your Home Electrification Project with HNI
Home Energy Audits are a good way to find out what type of upgrades you could make and the entire scope of the work. BGE has ENERGY STAR® audits and perform building grade assessments if deferred maintenance is an issue. BGE will also outline what rebates could be available for your project. After finding a contractor that can perform the work detailed in your energy audit, follow the following steps:
- Determine which HNI loan product you are interested in
- Make sure your home is in a partner neighborhood. Please refer to the Our Neighborhoods for more detailed information.
- Take the Loan Eligibility Quiz on our website and/or contact our Director of Capital Programs (Ben Glover) at (410) 332-0387 ext. 1005 / bglover@healthyneighborhoods.org
